Behind the Scenes: Building The Glass Archive

When I finished writing The Mosaic Key, I thought I knew exactly where Ethan Cole and Clara Vialli’s story would go next.

I was wrong.

One of the surprises of writing a series is that characters often reveal themselves gradually. By the time I reached the final pages of The Mosaic Key, I realized there were still many unanswered questions—not only about the mysteries surrounding the Archive, but also about Ethan, Clara, and the forces shaping their future.

That realization became the foundation for my second novel, The Glass Archive.

While The Mosaic Key explored hidden symbols, forgotten histories, and secrets buried beneath the surface, The Glass Archive asks a more dangerous question:

What happens when knowledge itself becomes the prize?

Without giving away too much, the new novel expands the world introduced in The Mosaic Key. Readers will travel beyond the locations of the first book and encounter new mysteries, new adversaries, and discoveries that challenge everything Ethan and Clara thought they understood.

One of the most enjoyable parts of writing the sequel has been exploring the history behind the story. Like the first novel, The Glass Archive draws inspiration from real places, historical events, and fascinating questions that continue to intrigue historians and researchers today.

The challenge is finding the balance between fact and fiction.

How much is real?

How much is invented?

I’ll leave that for readers to discover.

Perhaps the biggest lesson I’ve learned while writing a sequel is that readers care most about the characters. At recent book signings, one of the questions I hear most often is:

“Will there be another Ethan and Clara adventure?”

The answer is yes.

In fact, The Glass Archive is only the next step in a much larger journey.

As I continue writing, I’m grateful to everyone who has picked up The Mosaic Key, attended a signing, visited my website, or sent a message of encouragement. Every reader helps make the next chapter possible.

I’ll continue sharing updates as The Glass Archive progresses.

Until then, thank you for joining me on the adventure.

Why Hidden Codes Fascinate Us

There’s something timeless about hidden messages.

From ancient symbols carved into stone to encrypted wartime documents and forgotten archives sealed away for centuries, people have always been drawn to mysteries hidden beneath the surface of history.

That fascination became one of the driving ideas behind The Mosaic Key.

While writing the novel, I kept returning to a simple question:

What if history wasn’t as settled as we think it is?

Some of the world’s most compelling mysteries continue to inspire historians, researchers, and thriller writers alike:

  • The Voynich Manuscript, written in a language nobody has fully deciphered
  • Ancient mosaics and symbols whose meanings may have changed over centuries
  • Secret archives locked away from public access
  • Historical documents that disappeared without explanation
  • Lost civilizations and buried stories hidden beneath modern cities

What makes these mysteries so compelling is not just the puzzle itself — it’s the idea that the truth may still be out there waiting to be uncovered.

In The Mosaic Key, Ethan Cole and Clara Vialli follow a trail through forgotten archives, hidden codes, and dangerous discoveries tied to the past. But like many historical mysteries, the deeper they go, the more they realize that some secrets remain hidden for a reason.

I’ve always enjoyed thrillers that combine adventure with real historical intrigue. Stories where the mystery feels believable enough that you begin wondering:

Could something like this actually exist?

That blend of fiction and possibility is what inspired this series.

If you enjoy intelligent thrillers, hidden history, and stories built around ancient puzzles and modern danger, I think you’ll feel right at home in The Mosaic Key.

And honestly, part of the fun is this:

Even after finishing the book, you may find yourself looking at history a little differently.

5 Real Historical Mysteries Behind The Mosaic Key

Some stories begin with a simple question:

What if history buried something it never wanted found?

That question became the foundation for The Mosaic Key.

I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of history, mystery, and the secrets hidden beneath the surface of ordinary life. Ancient symbols. Lost archives. Codes buried in art and architecture. The idea that the past may still be quietly shaping the present.

While The Mosaic Key is a work of fiction, many of the themes and ideas in the novel were inspired by real historical mysteries that continue to intrigue historians, archaeologists, and thriller readers alike.

Here are five that particularly influenced the world of Ethan Cole and Clara Vialli.

1. The Vatican Secret Archives

For centuries, rumors and speculation have surrounded the Vatican Apostolic Archive — one of the most mysterious collections of historical documents in the world.

The archives contain centuries of correspondence, papal records, and historical materials stretching back over a thousand years. Access is highly restricted, which naturally fuels theories about what may still remain hidden within its walls.

The idea that forgotten documents could alter our understanding of history became a major inspiration for The Mosaic Key.

2. The Voynich Manuscript

Often called the world’s most mysterious book, the Voynich Manuscript is filled with undeciphered writing, strange illustrations, and symbols that no one has conclusively explained.

Despite decades of study by cryptographers, historians, and intelligence experts, the manuscript remains unsolved.

That blend of code-breaking, hidden meaning, and intellectual obsession heavily influenced the investigative side of the novel.

3. Ancient Mosaics and Hidden Symbolism

Mosaics are more than decoration.

Across ancient Rome, Byzantium, and medieval Europe, mosaics often carried political, religious, or symbolic messages hidden within their patterns and imagery.

Some historians believe certain works contained layered meanings understood only by select groups.

The idea that a message could remain concealed for centuries in plain sight became central to the story behind The Mosaic Key.

4. Lost Libraries and Hidden Archives

History is filled with vanished collections of knowledge.

The destruction of the Library of Alexandria remains one of the greatest cultural losses in human history, but many lesser-known archives disappeared through war, secrecy, or deliberate suppression.

What knowledge was lost?
What truths vanished with it?
And what if fragments survived?

Those questions helped shape the deeper mythology behind the novel.

5. Secret Societies and Historical Influence

From the Knights Templar to the Freemasons, secretive organizations have fascinated readers for generations.

Whether exaggerated or real, these groups continue to spark debate because they represent something timeless:

the fear that hidden forces may influence the course of history from the shadows.

That tension between public history and hidden truth lies at the heart of The Mosaic Key.

Why We Love Historical Thrillers

I think readers are drawn to historical thrillers because they combine two powerful ideas:

  • the excitement of discovery
  • and the unsettling possibility that history may still hold unanswered questions

The best thrillers make us wonder:

Could this actually be true?

That’s the feeling I wanted to create with Ethan Cole and Clara Vialli’s first adventure.

Why I Wrote the Cole & Vialli Series

Every story begins with a question.

For me, the question wasn’t “What if there were a secret conspiracy?”
It was “What if the past has already warned us—and we chose not to listen?”

The Cole & Vialli series grew out of that unease.

I’ve always been drawn to places where history, art, and power intersect: archives, museums, forgotten documents, and the quiet decisions that shape what survives and what disappears. We tend to think of history as fixed—something written down and safely stored—but in reality, it’s curated. Selected. Interpreted. Sometimes deliberately obscured.

That idea became the foundation of The Mosaic Key and everything that followed.

Ethan Cole came first. I wanted a protagonist who wasn’t a traditional hero—someone observant, practical, and quietly damaged. An everyman who notices patterns because he’s learned to survive on the margins. Clara Vialli followed naturally: intelligent, driven, and unwilling to let history be sanitized for comfort. Where Ethan hesitates, Clara pushes. Where Clara risks too much, Ethan steadies her.

Their partnership is the heart of the series.

As the books progress—from The Mosaic Key to The Glass Archive and beyond—the scale widens, but the focus remains human. These aren’t stories about omnipotent systems or flawless heroes. They’re about witnesses. About what happens when ordinary people realize that seeing something clearly carries responsibility.

The inspiration also comes from travel, from walking cities layered with memory—Venice, Prague, Cairo, Vancouver—and feeling how the past presses quietly against the present. History doesn’t shout. It whispers. And if you’re not paying attention, you miss it.

Ultimately, the Cole & Vialli series is my attempt to explore a simple idea:
truth doesn’t need permission—but it does need people willing to stand with it.

That’s the story I wanted to tell.

If you enjoy thrillers that blend history, mystery, and moral consequence, I hope you’ll find something meaningful in Ethan and Clara’s journey.
